Do I Have the Full Picture?
I do not have the full picture. I do not have the full picture of who my peers are. I think I will never have a full picture. Each and every person around me comes from different cultures and upbringings. They have different histories and hardships. The truth is that I have a limited view of others and they have a limited view of me. Is this wrong? No. However, this is not the end all be all. I am not to move forward with what little information I have of others and put them in the box of what little information I know of them or assume of them. Also, I am not to just exempt myself from the education of learning about others just because I will never have the full picture. We should always be learning about each other and from each other. There is no benefit or success in one narrative or one perspective. That is what makes someone small-minded, and they get to a place of having large blinders on to what reality and truth are in the world. When it comes to disagreements, taking everyone's wants and opinions into account is what will lead to engagement and harmony. We must examine the whole picture while working with students because we only see a tiny fraction of their life. It is important to establish a safe environment for students and this means seeking to gain perspective and knowing you won't always have the full picture.
Hey Avery, I loved your blog. Your so right, none of us really have the full picture and may never will. We all come from different backgrounds and different upbringings. I like that you said that I am not to just exempt myself from the education of learning about others just because I will never have the full picture. This is important for all of us to realize this because we should always do research and learn more about others and from others. We may not get the full picture, but we can get as much of the picture as possible. We must talk about and understand the whole picture in the classroom to make sure students can understand all sides of every situation covered. I know I didn't get the full picture when I was in grade school and that effected the way I view events and history. It's important for us as future educators to learn as much as possible about others and their different views, so we can teach our students better about this and we can become the best teachers we possibly can.
